Floods, wildfires, heatwaves, earthquakes. These aren't rare events anymore in Europe; they're becoming part of the rhythm of everyday life. And yet most schools still aren't ready to deal with them, not just in terms of safety protocols, but in a deeper educational sense: how do we actually prepare young people to understand these crises, think critically about them, and develop the practical skills to respond and lead change in a world where environmental instability is the new normal?

That's the gap ALKI (AI Learning and Knowledge Integration for Future Ready Environmental Crisis Solutions) was built to close. The project brings together seven partner organisations from Greece, Italy, Turkey, and Spain, with the goal of creating something European education currently doesn't have: a structured, AI enhanced model for environmental crisis education that works at both the educator and student level, designed from day one to be scalable, replicable, and grounded in real evidence.

What ALKI is about

Everything starts with research. Before building any tools or training, the project surveys students and educators across all partner countries to understand where they currently stand: what they know, how they perceive environmental crises, and how ready they feel to work with AI driven solutions. That baseline shapes everything that comes after it.

From there, ALKI runs on two parallel tracks. One is focused on educators, giving them training, peer learning opportunities, and practical tools so they can bring AI enhanced disaster education into their classrooms with real confidence. The other is focused on students, through workshops, hackathons, school missions, and mentorship, so they can engage directly with environmental challenges, build their own AI driven solutions, and grow into citizens who don't just understand crises, but actually know how to respond to them.

Ethical AI runs through both tracks. The project is committed to making sure AI is brought into education responsibly, transparently, and in line with European values and data protection standards.

What ALKI will produce

By the end of the project, ALKI aims to deliver a validated AI driven disaster education model, an ALKI Instructional Guide and Training Kit for educators, a digital platform and ALKI Academy offering open access to learning resources, a set of student led AI powered disaster response solutions built through hackathons, and a Policy Recommendation Guidebook aimed at policymakers and institutions at both the national and European level.

Work Packages

WP1 — Project Management. Lead: PDETh. Covers overall coordination, steering committee meetings, quality assurance, financial management, and internal communication across all partners for the full 27 month duration of the project.

WP2 — Survey and Analysis for Learning Design. Lead: UNIPG. Involves designing and running a transnational survey on students' and educators' prior knowledge, perceptions, and readiness around environmental crises and AI driven solutions. Includes Ethics Committee approval, data collection across five schools, full scale deployment, and a Transnational Comparative Analysis Report that shapes everything that follows.

WP3 — Empowering Educators Towards Environmental Crisis Management. Lead: Alpha Omega Research & Consulting. Covers the design of the ALKI Instructional Guide and Training Kits, a 5 day LTTA for educators in Spain, scaling up through intra school training across partner schools, and the development of the Educators' Handbook and Student Learning Guide.

WP4 — Empowering Students Towards Environmental Crisis Management. Lead: Doukas School. Covers student workshops across five schools, intra school hackathons that produce AI powered disaster response solutions, school missions where student ambassadors mentor peers in disaster affected areas, and a structured mentorship programme connecting student teams with experts and policymakers.

WP5 — Impact, Dissemination & Exploitation. Lead: Idea Re S.r.l. Covers development of the ALKI digital platform and Academy, EU wide regional conferences, a Policy Recommendation Guidebook, and an ongoing dissemination strategy aimed at policymakers, academics, and educational institutions across Europe.
